In recent years, electric cars have become very popular in our society. More and more car brands are working in the development of this type of vehicles and little by little we are seeing how the electric car model is being implemented in our society. We are going to explain everything you need to know about the electric car charge at home

Although we are still in the introductory phase of this model, it seems clear that the electric motor will unseat the traditional internal combustion engine and this will be the first step towards a new way of mobility in our society, supported by two fundamental pillars: technology and sustainability.

Undoubtedly, the advantages of an electric car are increasing, and in the near future we will see how the purchase of an electric car will be much more advisable than the purchase of a combustion car. We only have to look at current legislation, which is increasingly favorable towards this model, with advantages in the circulation and parking for electric vehicles in large cities against the restrictions of the most polluting combustion vehicles.

Electric car charge at home

In Spain, the “Real Decreto” 1053/2014 approves the Complementary Technical Instruction (CTI), which regulates the infrastructures for electric cars charging. This law includes all the standards that this type of installations must comply and also regulates the charging spaces in public and private parking. In both cases, a car park must have a charging station for every 40 car parks.

Regarding the electric vehicles charging in home, the law dictates that an additional electric circuit should be enabled for the recharging of electric cars and that this circuit may not exceed 9.2 kW of power.

What options do we have for recharging an electric vehicle in our home?

Electric car charge at home

We currently have four recharge modes:

Slow charge

Mode 1: In this mode the recharging is made with a standard switch that is not used exclusively for the electric vehicle recharging. That is, we recharge the electric car using a conventional 230V plug. This charging mode is intended for small electric vehicles (scooters, hoverboards etc …), and is not advisable for large electric vehicles such as a car.

Mode 2: Known as “Slow charge”, it is a single-phase 230 V recharge, with a maximum of 3.7 kW. It is done through the installation of a box that connects to a conventional plug dedicated exclusively to the recharging of the electric car. This special box allows us to recharge the car complying with all safety standards. The recharge time depends on the battery capacity of the vehicle, usually around 8 or 10 hours on average, making it ideal for nightly recharging of the vehicle.

Fast charge

Mode 3: “Semi-fast charge”. This charging mode requires the installation of a Wallbox, a charging station intended only for electric cars. It is one of the most recommended systems for recharging 100% electric vehicles and is the system that we can find in public charging places. It allows a single-phase and three-phase recharge, so we can recharge our vehicle at more than 7.2 kW. Therefore, the charge time is around 3 or 4 hours, always depending on the battery capacity of the vehicle.

Mode 4: “Fast charge”. This type of charge is only available at properly prepared charging stations located outside our home. It allows a charge to more than 50 kW, so we can recharge 70% of the battery capacity in less than 30 minutes. These types of charges are recommended when we are away from home and we need to recharge our vehicle in a short period of time, but they are not recommended for a home, due to its high cost, both from the station itself and from the installation. In addition, the electricity network of most homes is not prepared for this type of facility.

These are the different charging mode for electric cars. The most recommended for a home are mode 2 and 3, but everything will depend on the characteristics of the vehicle and the home. The most advisable thing is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and make the recharges following their guidelines, so we will make sure to extend the life of the battery to the maximum and we will be able to fully enjoy a sustainable mobility.
